...STRONG THUNDERSTORMS APPROACHING LOCAL OFFSHORE ATLANTIC WATERS...



The areas affected include...

  Atlantic Waters of Puerto Rico AND USVI from 10 NM to 19.5N...



At 822 PM AST, Doppler radar indicated a line of strong 

thunderstorms approaching the local waters, capable of producing 

winds to around 30 knots. These thunderstorm were located over just 

north-northeast of the local offshore Atlantic waters, moving 

southeast at 20 knots.



PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...



Mariners can expect gusty winds to around 30 knots, locally higher

waves, lightning strikes, and heavy downpours. Boaters should seek

safe harbor immediately until these storms pass.



Intense lightning is occurring with these storms. If caught on open 

water stay below deck if possible, keep away from ungrounded metal 

objects.



Report severe weather to the Coast Guard or nearest law enforcement

agency. They will relay your report to the National Weather Service

forecast office.

The National Weather Service in San Juan has issued a



* Special Marine Warning for...

  Atlantic Waters of Puerto Rico AND USVI from 10 NM to 19.5N...



* Until 1000 PM AST.



* At 856 PM AST, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing 

  waterspouts was located over mainly areas of northwesternmost 

  Offshore Atlantic Waters, moving southeast at 15 to 20 knots.



  HAZARD...Waterspouts and wind gusts to 40 knots.



  SOURCE...Radar.



  IMPACT...Waterspouts can easily overturn boats and create locally 

           hazardous seas. Small craft could be damaged in briefly 

           higher winds and suddenly higher waves.



* The severe thunderstorm will remain over mainly open waters.



PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...



Move to safe harbor until hazardous weather passes.



Move to safe harbor immediately as gusty winds and high waves are

expected.
