...Rapid ice growth expected on western Lake Erie through Friday

morning...



Rapid ice growth is occurring on the western basin of Lake Erie.

Ice developed quickly on Thursday west of the Lake Erie Islands. 

Temperatures will be in the teens overnight and ice is expected to

rapidly expand between the Lake Erie Islands and Cleveland 

through Friday morning. Southwesterly winds will ramp up to 15 to 

25 knots on Friday. This could result in shifting of the newly 

formed ice. 



Rapid ice expansion could trap vessels traveling on the western

basin of Lake Erie. Ice drift is also possible on Friday as winds

increase out of the southwest. Vessels traveling on Lake Erie

should exercise caution.

The National Weather Service in Duluth MN has issued a



* Snow Squall Warning for...

  Southeastern Itasca County in north central Minnesota...

  Central St. Louis County in northeastern Minnesota...



* Until 945 PM CST.



* At 848 PM CST, a dangerous snow squall was located 8 miles

  southwest of McCarthy Beach State Park, or 15 miles northwest of

  Hibbing, moving southeast at 20 mph.



  HAZARD...Intense bursts of heavy snow. Gusty winds leading to 

           blowing snow and visibility rapidly falling to less than 

           one-quarter mile. Wind gusts up to 20 mph.



  SOURCE...Radar indicated.



  IMPACT...Travel will become difficult and potentially dangerous 

           within minutes.

Hibbing, Lake Vermilion, Virginia, Chisholm, Eveleth, Mountain Iron,

Hoyt Lakes, Coleraine, Gilbert, Aurora, Babbitt, Keewatin, Buhl,

Nashwauk, Biwabik, Cherry, Swan River, Embarrass, Cook, and Tower.

Slow Down! Rapid changes in visibility and road conditions are
