The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a



* Flash Flood Warning for...

  The island of Hawaii in Hawaii County



* Until 1215 PM HST.



* At 911 AM HST, emergency management reported heavy rain over the 

  Kau and Puna Districts of the Big Island. Water was reported as 

  ponding and rising on Highway 11 near mile marker 60. Radar 

  indicated that rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per 

  hour. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.



  HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by heavy rain.



  SOURCE...Emergency management.



  IMPACT...Flooding in drainages, streams, rivers, roads,

           properties, and other low-lying areas. Public road

           closures possible in some areas. Landslides are

           possible in steep terrain.



* Some locations that will experience flash flooding include...

  Hawaiian Paradise Park, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Volcano, 

  Glenwood, Wood Valley, Pahala, Mountain View, Punaluu Beach, 

  Hawaiian Acres, Kawa Flats, Orchidlands Estates, Pahoa, Keaau, 

  Naalehu, Hawaiian Ocean View, Fern Forest, Eden Roc, Fern Acres 

  and Kalapana.



PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...



Stay away from streams, rivers, drainage ditches, and culverts, even 

if they are currently dry.



Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on 

foot. Turn around, don't drown.

This warning may need to be extended beyond 1215 PM HST if flooding 

persists.
